Refurbishment of the electrical installation
of an EKG 5A shovel excavator

Summary: A shovel excavator of the type EKG 5 was refurbished using a favourably-priced concept. One advantage was that the use of modern electronic current converter technology enabled already-installed DC motors to be retained. This was made possible by dynamic power-factor compensation. Spare parts are cheap and will have a long availability. The fully-digitized current converter and its drive control assure high functional reliability. Comprehensive diagnosis functions are incorporated into the current converter and can be parameterized and documented by PC. The capital costs for the EKG 5 retrofit are approx. 50 % of the cost of new acquisition of a comparable hydraulic excavator.
