New state-of-the-art cement production facility

Holcim (US) announced on 17.08.2009 the opening of a new state of the art cement plant in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri/USA (Fig.1). President and CEO of Holcim (US) Bernard Terver said, “This is a great day for Holcim as this project comes to completion. Since its inception, we have looked forward to the production of portland cement at this state of the art facility. ... This plant and our robust network of terminals and distribution assets will ensure a reliable supply of the highest quality cement to our valued customers today and for many years to come.” The Ste. Genevieve Plant is among the world’s largest cement manufacturing facilities – with the ability to produce over 12 000 metric t/d of clinker and 4 million metric t/a of cement. The plant site includes a harbor and fleeting facility on the Mississippi River, with some of the largest silos ever built. The project resulted in more than 2500 construction jobs, and currently employs 250 people.

In maintaining Holcim’s commitment to sustainable development, the plant will be one of the most environmentally efficient cement production facilities ever operated.  Holcim has made major commitments to both minimize emissions and protect air quality along with the conservation and preservation of natural resources.  For example, CO2 (carbon dioxide emissions) generation per metric ton of cement delivered will be reduced substantially compared to other cement sources. This is a result of investment in state-of-the-art equipment with high plant efficiencies, optimized raw materials, and energy
efficient transportation opportunities, primarily in the form of barges.

While about 1700 acres will be permitted for quarry and plant operations, ongoing reclamation will ensure that only a portion is opened at any given time. Holcim has restored 61 acres of wetlands on the property.  Other than the on-site quarry materials, more than 75  % of the plant’s materials and
products will be received and shipped by river, maximizing both energy and environmental efficiency. Jeff Ouhl, Ste. Genevieve Plant Manager said, “As we continue to strive toward safety and sustainability, this plant is a true testament to the many people who worked so hard to get us to this point.  Holcim customers can now look forward to years of a sole source, consistently performing, high quality product from the Ste. Genevieve Plant.”
