Assessment of the effect of fine and coarse recycled aggregates and natural pozzolan on various properties of self-compacting concrete

This paper reports on the fresh, mechanical and durability properties of composite self-compacting concrete made by the substitution of 0%, 50%, and 100% recycled concrete aggregate for natural aggregate, and the substitution of 15% natural pozzolan for ordinary cement. The results indicate that the substitution of recycled concrete aggregate for natural concrete aggregate and the substitution of 15% natural pozzolan for ordinary cement provide fresh, mechanical and durability properties of the composite SCC that can be used in various construction projects, such as the concreting, maintenance, renovation and restoration of new and existing structures.

1 Introduction

Composite concrete is the most widely used building material in the world and therefore consumes large amounts of natural resourc es [1, 2]. On the other hand, large quantities of demolition waste are produced by the construction industry every year.
