Demographic change reaches the cement industry

The cement industry is engaging in a recruitment campaign. “The structure of employment in Germany’s cement industry has greatly changed in the last few years.” This statement was made by Dr. Martin Schneider, Managing Director of the German Cement Works Association, during the presentation of a new study with the title “Employment in the cement industry” at a conference of the industry’s social partners.

“We are already feeling the impact of demographic change”, Schneider went on. “Beside the significantly growing demand made on our employees in terms of qualification, there has also been a substantial increase in their average age. And this will continue to rise in the future”. It is already clear that the foreseeable supply of young skilled workers will not in itself be sufficient to compensate for this trend. Therefore qualification is the magic word.

A large number of participants were employees of companies in the cement industry and pit and quarry industries, especially executives in the fields of human resources, plant management and training. They placed particular importance on the opportunities provided for the exchange of ideas and views between the workers’ and employers’ representatives regarding new concepts.
