Effect of wet- and dry-grind fly ash on the durability of concrete

This paper presents a series of experimental studies on the durability properties of concretes containing wet-grind and dry-grind fly ash. The durability performance of fly ash concrete was assessed from measurements of compressive strength, drying shrinkage, chloride permeability, seawater corrosion resistance and pore structure tests. Results show that the wet-grind process narrows the particle size distribution range of fly ash and controls the particle size distribution. The durability of fly ash slurry concrete was shown to be improvable compared to dry-grind fly ash concrete.

1 Introduction

Currently, concrete is the most widely applied material in infrastructure construction. The durability of concrete is one of the most important construction performance parameters with complex effects regarding service life enhancement [1]. Due to the fact that the cement production process consumes huge amounts of energy and that cement production involves greenhouse gases emissions, supplementary cementitious materials have been attracting the attention of researchers over the last few decades.

Fly ash and slag, the most common supplementary cementitious materials, can enhance...
