2.419 cent gas surcharge burdens energy-intensive industries

On August 15, the gas levy was set at 2.419 cents per kilowatt hour, resulting in additional burdens for households and companies from October – so far without relief from the government for the industry of the energy-intensive sector.

“Securing the gas supply is a task of the state for society as a whole. Financing the gas levy for system-relevant gas importers from the federal budget is therefore the right way to go. As an energy-intensive basic materials industry, we call on the German government to follow this proposal,” says Thomas Perterer, Chairman of the German Lime Industry Association. “The industry will only remain competitive internationally if the gas supply burden on industry in Germany is also eased.”

The exact amount of the levy is calculated by the so-called market area manager Trading Hub Europe, a joint venture of the gas transmission system operators. For energy-intensive industries, this means an average additional burden of € 7,250 per employee. In addition, the levy will increase electricity costs and the gas storage levy.
