Wacker presents resource-saving silicone joint sealant for natural stone applications

Wacker presented its new silicone joint sealant ELASTOSIL® eco 7770 P at the European Coatings Show 2025. The condensation-curing product was developed for applications in the construction and sanitary sectors and is particularly suitable for natural stone applications. The special features of the sealant include high resistance to mold and mildew combined with a low fungicide content and classification as very low-emission in accordance with the guidelines of the Association of Emission Controlled Installation Materials (GEV). Elastosil® eco 7770 P is manufactured in a resource-saving manner. It is the first silicone sealant that Wacker offers exclusively as an eco-product. The European Coatings Show took place from March 25 to 27, 2025 in Nuremberg/Germany.

Elastosil eco 7770 P is a one-component, virtually odorless compound that crosslinks to form a low-modulus elastomer with high elastic recovery when exposed to atmospheric moisture. Alcohol is released during the cross-linking process as a result of the condensation reaction. The sealant adheres to almost all materials commonly used in the construction industry without the need to prime the surfaces. The product is weather-resistant, is equally suitable for indoor and outdoor applications and can also be used on marble, metals or other sensitive surfaces.

Wacker uses a special manufacturing concept in the formulation of Elastosil eco 7770 P. It is based on a special, non-volatile silicone plasticizer. This is formulated in such a way that it cannot penetrate the pores of natural stone such as marble, granite or sandstone. As a result, the natural stone substrates adjacent to the joint are not hydrophobized. The natural stone remains flawless.

The sealant formulation also contains a patented silane-based crosslinking system, which results in a modified surface structure. The cured sealant is given a smooth surface on which no mold can adhere. This makes it possible to limit the use of fungicides to around one hundredth of the amount normally used in standard sanitary sealants.

With the crosslinking system and the special plasticizer, Wacker also ensures that only very small quantities of volatile compounds can escape from the sealant during application. Due to its extremely low emissions, which mark the limit of what is technically feasible, the new sealant has been awarded the EC 1 plus classification in the EMICODE classification system of the Association of Emission Controlled Flooring Materials (GEV).

Wacker uses plant-based methanol in the production of Elastosil eco 7770 P. In addition, all fossil raw materials used in production are 100 percent offset by sustainably certified biomass. The new silicone sealant is certified according to the REDcert² standard, which ensures traceability throughout the entire manufacturing process - from the production of precursors to the ready-to-use sealant.
