CO2 infrastructure: OGE and TES jointly develop a 1000 km CO2 transport network

The German Lime Association supports the initiative of OGE (formerly Open Grid Europe GmbH), one of Europe’s leading transmission system operators, for the planned construction of a CO2 transport network.

The project focuses on CO2 emissions that cannot be avoided in the production process, as is the case in the lime industry. Thus, OGE connects sites where CO2 is captured, such as in the cement and lime industries, with sites where CO2 is used, such as the chemical industry. All in the spirit of the circular economy. In addition, the CO2 network connects CO2 capture sites with relevant port locations, such as Wilhelmshaven.

The CO2 transport network will initially be 1000 km long and will enable a transport volume of around 18 million t of CO2 per year. To prioritize green energy supply and CO2 reduction, OGE and Tree Energy Solutions (TES), which recently announced a Green Energy Hub for the import of green gas in Wilhelmshaven, have entered into a strategic partnership for a CO2 circular economy. The first part of the network is scheduled to be operational from 2028. The network will be equally available to all market participants from the start.

The carbon cycle strategy will significantly accelerate the energy transition in Germany and help the industrial, power and mobility sectors achieve their decarbonization targets. This requires a Germany-wide CO2 strategy and corresponding instruments.
