Dal Engineering Group is awarded the replacement of the
limestone rotary dryer at the Otterbein plant

Dal Machinery & Design, a company member of Dal Engineering Group, has been awarded by Zement & Kalkwerke Otterbein replacement of their ongoing limestone rotary dryer as an EPC project which has already been running since the year 2005. In this project, Dal will be responsible for manufacturing the complete new dryer which has dimensions of Ø 3 m x 22 m including the shell, the internal material lifting plates, two tyres, 4 rollers and shafts and the rotary chain units which are used as the drive system of the rotary dryer.

Dal is expected to deliver this dryer which will have a total weight of approximately 86 t as one part in October 2022, which will be manufactured at the Dal workshop placed in the European Free Trade Zone Corlu in Turkey.

The Otterbein cement and lime plant is a traditional family business in its 5th generation, founded in 1889. Today, Otterbein produces a comprehensive range of products from the natural raw material limestone at the Großenlüder-Müs site in accordance with the guiding principle “We bring stones to life”. The product range includes over 100 different products in the cement, lime, mortar and plaster sectors, as well as mineral coatings for our customers in various fields of applications.

Limestone is dried when subsequent manufacturing steps require a reduction in moisture in order to precondition the material properly. The currently used dryer in the Otterbein plant is used for drying limestone which is working with a capacity of 50-100 t/h.

In this process, about half of the dried limestone is used for cement production and the other half for lime finishing. Here, the limestone enters with a moisture of 10-30% which depends on the season and leaves the dryer ideally with 3-4% residual moisture.
