Heidelberger Beton makes infralight
concrete practicable

There is a major hype surrounding infralight concrete. Architects dream of monolithic building methods using visible concrete, which are sustainable and authentic. Now, Heidelberger Beton GmbH have taken infralight concrete from the research stage and put it into practice.

For the first time in Germany, a public building has been brought to life with infralight concrete, with the Betonoase youth and family centre. The concrete conceived for this project by Heidelberger Beton, together with architects Gruber and Popp and Professor Mike Schlaich, was configured in a way that would ensure that it could be manufactured and delivered elsewhere in this quality for a wide variety of projects. Heidelberger Beton, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement, has implemented the architects’ ideas with regards to efficiency and aesthetics in a practicable product, with raw materials which can now be clearly defined. This means that this infralight concrete can be produced for other projects in Berlin or elsewhere with the parameters given by Heidelberger Beton. The concrete producer accompanies the entire construction process, gives advice in the run-up period and provides architects with information about specifications. Builders are also given precise information about how to handle this self-compacting concrete with regards to formwork hardening or integration. With the Betonoase, infralight concrete has made the leap from the research stage into practical construction application. The necessary permit in individual cases for infralight concrete projects can now be obtained, with reference to the project carried out and the product developed by Heidelberger Beton.
