Use of markers in production process monitoring and for the characterization of building materials

In a joint research project between BASF SE and Schwenk Zement KG, the use of “markers” in the production of building materials was investigated. The potentials and limitations of qualitative and quantitative determination of the cement content of concrete with complex binder formulations were explored. The findings are recounted below.

1 Introduction

Deficiencies of construction and structural damage affecting new buildings are currently causing an enormous amount of macro-economic damage in Germany. They account for some 2.5 %–3 % of overall newbuild expenditures. The consequences of a worst-case scenario, i.e., structural failure, can be drastic, not only for life and limb but also for the environment and for the companies involved.
