First CCC certifications for cement in Germany

Heidelberg Materials is the first company in Germany to have three cements successfully certified according to the new CO₂ label of the German Cement Association (VDZ). The products from Heidelberg Materials' sustainable evoBuild product range meet the requirements of the Cement Carbon Classes (CCC) and thus mark a milestone for climate-friendly construction in Germany.

Cements from the sustainable evoBuild product portfolio

The certified evoBuild cements – CEM II/B-S 42.5 N, CEM II/B-M (S-LL) 42.5 N, and CEM III/A 32.5 N-LH – come from the Burglengenfeld plant and meet the criteria of CCC class C or D. They fall below the threshold value of 500 kg CO₂ equivalent per ton of cement, which, according to the VDZ, is the benchmark for sustainable cements. This means that they are not only part of the evoBuild portfolio, but also pioneers in the application of the new CO₂ label.

“With the CCC certification of our evoBuild cements, we are sending a clear signal for transparency and climate protection in the construction industry,” explains Ottmar Walter, member of the management board for Germany at Heidelberg Materials. “The VDZ‘s new label is a decisive step toward making CO₂-reduced products visible and increasing demand for them – both in the public and private construction sectors.”

The new CO₂ label from the VDZ classifies climate-friendly products as follows: Classes A to D indicate low-emission cements with a CO₂ footprint between 100 kg CO₂/t cement and 500 kg CO₂/t cement in four stages. Cements with a CO₂ footprint of less than 100 kg CO₂/t cement are considered “near zero” cements.

evoBuild is in line with the VDZ’s CO2 label

The evoBuild brand brings together all of Heidelberg Materials’ CO₂-reduced and circular products. It is based on clear, internationally agreed criteria: For cements, this means a CO₂ reduction of at least 30% compared to the GCCA reference value for CEM I. With the combination of the evoBuild strategy and CCC certification, Heidelberg Materials is underlining its role as a driver of the transformation towards climate-neutral construction. The company plans to further expand its evoBuild portfolio and have additional cements certified in Germany.
