SaltX from Sweden deepens the partnership with Holcim

SaltX Technology from Sweden strengthened the partnership with Holcim after a first partnership agreement had been signed in June 2025, and Holcim became a major shareholder. The goal by the two companies is to implement Europe’s first fully electrified cement plant by 2028. The collaboration involves the joint development and validation of the technology to electrify the cement manufacturing process and enable the fossil-free production of clinker, the main cement component. The SaltX technology platform is based on innovative plasma burners and combines electrified calcination (EAC) with electrified sintering (a new development).
After a number of successful tests with plasma technology by SaltX and Holcim, the two companies plan to conduct large-scale technology and materials testing at the Electric Calcination Research Center (ECRC) in Hofors (photo) during 2026. The second development track aims to develop a fully electrified clinker manufacturing process in one of Holcim’s cement plants to produce clinker without fossil fuels. Accordingly, the two companies have created a shared technical and commercial roadmap, aiming first to demonstrate the technology at pilot scale and then to facilitate industrial-scale up. The investment demonstrates Holcim’s strong confidence in the technology and its industrial potential.
