Sustainability seal underlines “Future in Action” strategy: Cemex gravel plants receive CSC gold certification

Since August 2022, two Cemex raw material sites in Germany have been CSC-certified: the Parey gravel plant of Cemex Kies Rogätz GmbH in Saxony-Anhalt and the Immelborn gravel plant of Cemex Kies & Splitt GmbH in Thuringia. Both plants now carry the CSC Gold Seal for sustainable operations in the concrete industry and its supply chain. The CSC aims to make the manufacturing process of concrete transparent and to document the origin of a raw material from responsible sources. It takes the entire value chain into account. Alongside cement and water, aggregates are a key component of concrete.

In the certification process, the gravel plants submitted numerous documents and evidence for evaluation. Furthermore, auditors scrutinized the entire production process in accordance with the CSC criteria. In particular, they also looked at the social and environmental impact of product manufacture.

Stephanie Sattler, Advisor Environment and Coordinator Sustainability Materials of Cemex in Germany: “Following the successful audit of the Parey and Immelborn gravel plants, we now have CSC certifications in our Materials and Cement product areas. Materials includes mineral raw materials and ready-mix concrete. This means we can demonstrate sustainable production throughout the entire supply chain - from the first stone to the concrete delivered.”

The Rüdersdorf cement plant of Cemex Zement GmbH has already held a CSC Gold certificate since 2021. Four ready-mixed concrete plants of Cemex Deutschland AG have also been at Gold status since their recertification in spring 2022, and six others are due for a new audit at the end of 2022.

Cemex Kies Rogätz GmbH, Cemex Kies & Splitt GmbH and Cemex Zement GmbH belong to Cemex Deutschland AG, a subsidiary of the globally active building materials company Cemex.

The Concrete Sustainability Council was initiated by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Members in the CSC include companies, associations, certification bodies and institutes. Cemex is heavily involved in the CSC: The building materials company is one of the founding members.
