Are new magnesia-based cements the future? Part 1: Analysis of former developments

To decrease CO2 emissions in the cement industry, new cement-based binders are in the focus of attention, especially calcium-based systems, geopolymers and new magnesia binders.

1 Introduction

Modern construction materials are based on the hydrau­lic binder Portland cement, mainly used for manufacturing concrete and next to water, the globally most used material. Currently worldwide more than one tonne of concrete is produced per capita every year.
