Certification is based on a system introduced worldwide by the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC). This enables companies in the concrete, cement and aggregates sectors to demonstrate their environmental, social and economic responsibility, regardless of their location. Certification takes place in the categories of management, environment, the social aspect of sustainability, and in the categories of economy and product (supply) chain. In addition to the company, certification also covers its value chain.

The background for the certification is the increasingly emerging global assessment of buildings in terms of their sustainability. This evaluation by international systems such as BREEAM or DGNB also includes the sustainability of the building materials and products used. Current studies on the investment volume in the property sector in Germany show that more than one in five euros is already invested in certified "green buildings". Against this background, certified companies are gaining an increasingly important advantage.

The organizer of the CSC certification system in Germany is the Bundesverband der Deutschen Transportbetonindustrie e.V. in Berlin. The certification itself is carried out by recognized certification bodies independent of the CSC. These include Kiwa Deutschland GmbH, Hamburg, SGS Holding Deutschland B.V. & Co. KG, Hamburg, TÜV SÜD AG, Munich, and VDZ Service GmbH, Düsseldorf.

There are currently 382 CSC-certified companies worldwide, 163 of them in Germany. 32 of the total of 46 certified cement plants are also located in Germany.
