New rotary screw vacuum pumps with variable speed drive provide 50 % energy savings

In April 2015 Atlas Copco from Nacka, Sweden has released a far-reaching innovation in vacuum technology to its customers. The new GHS 350-900 VSD+ vacuum pump range gives users energy savings of around 50 % compared to traditional rotary vane pumps. The new device offers a lot of benefits for customers in various industries and represents a real leap forward in the vacuum industry.

The GHS VSD+ series is a range of new-generation, highly efficient, intelligent vacuum pumps with Variable Speed Drive (VSD). Based on the well-known and durable plug-and-play design principles of Atlas Copco compressors, these vacuum pumps have been designed by vacuum engineers to deliver peak performance at operating pressures commonly found in industrial applications. The facts are:

Energy savings of around 50 %:

A state-of-the-art technology, variable speed drive (VSD) and an innovative inlet control valve combine to produce a leap forward in efficiency to dramatically reduce lifecycle costs.

Significantly better performance against benchmarked oil-sealed and dry vane vacuum pumps.

Quiet operation – noise levels are far below that of comparable technologies.

sustainable productivity due to built-in efficiency. Conform to energy management and environmental commitments according to ISO 50001/14001.

Reduced environmental impact due to ultra-high oil retention at all operating pressures – from ultimate pressure to atmospheric pressure.

The GHS VSD+ series offers a very low noise level compared to other vacuum pumps available on the market today. Energy recovery leads to minimal hot air in the workplace – avoiding the usual problem of hot air in air-conditioned production environments. Its market-leading oil retention means that the quality of the exhausted air is optimal, which contributes to employee well-being as this air is often breathed. It also avoids oil spills on the factory floor, which commonly occurs with conventional oil-lubricated pumps. The end result is a significantly cleaner working environment. Furthermore it also leads to faster cycle times. Due to its plug & play design the new series assures an easy and fast installation which saves time and space. The footprint is one of the smallest on the market: no larger than the footprint of a standard pallet. Everything required is delivered as a complete package.

When developing the GHS 350-900 VSD+ range Atlas Copco looked at every single element to identify where extra efficiencies could be gained. For instance, the newly designed vacuum specific element offers a significantly longer lifetime than a screw compressor and vane pumps, as well as its high efficiency. The new patent inlet control valve provides modulating vacuum control in conjunction with the VSD drive to minimize energy consumption.

The complete GHS VSD+ range is equipped with the Atlas Copco Elektronikon® monitoring system, and SMARTlink which is an ideal solution for remote monitoring. The Elektronikon® is a state-of-the art monitoring system for vacuum pumps. It is simple and comprehensive, and also leads to energy savings. It can integrate the customer’s plant management system and control other vacuum pumps.

Atlas Copco’s GHS VSD+ series will be expanded with sizes up to 2000 m3/hr by summer of 2015 and up to 4500 m3/hr early 2016.
