The long but successful way to a small-scale MSW to RDF production facility in a developing country

RDF production from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is not common in developing countries where basic landfills are the standard. The example from Cilacap/Indonesia shows that RDF production can be done successfully with all involved parties and the environment benefiting. Applying a robust design, reliable RDF production is possible, even with highly varying waste characteristics.

1 Introduction

The overall concept of a small scale Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) production facility with Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as input was developed way back in 2010.

It was the idea from the start to overcome the initial project perception hurdles called “…our waste is very different from your waste in Europe…”, “…we are not ready for this yet…”, “…there is no buyer for this type of RDF…” by establishing a comparable small facility involving the municipality as waste owner and the cement company as the RDF user from the start.
